The facility, located on the south side of the Middleton Hall of Science on the Mishawaka campus, includes three human patient simulators aimed at giving students the ability to "practice high-level skills in a safe learning environment."
The three patient simulators are designed for adult, pediatric and infant simulations. The facility also features two simulated acute care hospital rooms. Students will use the facility to act "exactly as if they were in a hospital, with protocol such as washing their hands before touching the human simulators," according to the college.
"Students will have the opportunity to practice skills that they don’t often see or can’t be part of in a clinical learning situation," said Deborah Gillum, dean of nursing at Bethel College. "If nursing students see a code blue in the hospital, they are just observers, not participants. Here in our acute care hospital rooms, we can simulate a code blue and our students have a chance to physically and mentally practice what needs to be done in that situation. This will make them more confident and prepared when they encounter circumstances like this in the field."
Officials broke ground on the nursing lab a year ago. The facility also features a new mid-fidelity nursing laboratory/classroom which includes six hospital beds with low- to -mid-fidelity mannequins.
Bethel College will hold an open house October 26 where guests can tour the new facility.
