Town of Speedway Fills Key Roles in Public Works, Parks

He joined the Speedway Fire Department in 1983 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1995. In 2000, Walters was promoted to deputy chief. He has extensive experience in hazardous materials management, incident management, and recruit training. Walters also represented the town on state and local commissions related to emergency management, fire safety and biohazard response.
In 2007, he joined the town’s Street Dept. as street commissioner. In this role, he managed the budget for several town departments, as well as led several infrastructure improvements, including the 16th St. roundabout, Main St. enhancements, new pocket parks, and multiple sewer separation projects. Additionally, Walters oversaw solid waste services such as trash, recycling and yard waste.
Also, Tammy Smith has been named director of programming for the town’s Dept. of Parks and Recreation. She previously worked as insurance coordinator and customer service specialist at Kenworth of Indianapolis/Palmer Trucks. Smith also served as an executive assistant at Golden Rule Insurance for 10 years, where she provided direct administrative support to the general counsel. Smith previously was an assistant at Ft. Benjamin Harrison Finance & Accounting Center and operated a home daycare in Speedway for four years.
