Don Moreau, who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and later founded the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation, died at the age of 89 in August.
He became the first chief executive officer of the HVAF in 1998 five years after he founded the nonprofit organization. Governors Otis Bowen, Robert Orr, Evan Bayh, Frank O’Bannon, Joe Kernan, Mitch Daniels, Mike Pence and Eric Holcomb each awarded Moreau a Sagamore of the Wabash and he is thought to have received the honor more than anyone else. His career within Indiana government included leadership roles with the Department of Commerce, State Student Assistance Commission, Indiana Toll Road Commission, Emergency Medical Services Commission, Department of Labor, Indiana State Fair and the Korean and Vietnam Wars Memorial Commission.
Moreau was inducted into the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame as part of its first class in 2014.
