Steele State Historic Site in Nashville has broken ground on the $2.2 million Singing Winds Visitor Center. The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites says the facility will enhance the guest experience and allow for additional programming at the Brown County site.
The 4,600-square-foot visitor center will allow for the consolidation of current ticket sales, the gift shop and offices into one location, according to the state museum. It will feature an orientation area, coffee bar, workroom and an expanded gift shop.
The project is being funded through a gift from Barbara and Bob Stevens, as well as a matching gift from the state.
"I think, with the new visitor center that has a place for people to have a cup of coffee and sit and enjoy the same scenery that T.C. Steele and (wife) Selma enjoyed when they lived here it’ll bring more and more people and that’s what we’re looking forward to," Barbara Stevens said following the groundbreaking ceremony.
The visitor center is scheduled to open next summer. Earlier this year, the Indiana Historical Bureau dedicated a historical marker at the T.C. Steele Historic Site.
