IEDC Considers New Carlisle Site a Contender For Potential Toyota-Mazda Plant
A spokeswoman for the Indiana Economic Development Corp. confirms the state sees a site in New Carlisle as a potential fit for a $1.6 billion project being floated by Toyota and Mazda. Abby Gras adds that at any given time, the IEDC is evaluating sites for some 80-90 projects in its pipeline. The automaking collaboration could bring an anticipated 4,000 jobs wherever it ends up being located.
Gras says it is too early to speculate on which sites the state sees as top contenders for such a project. She adds Toyota executives "briefly mentioned" the collaborative project during the recent Governor Eric Holcomb-led economic development mission to the home country of the automakers. Specific sites, she says, were not discussed and no negotiations about the project were held.
The concept of the New Carlisle site being a viable option for the proposed plant was brought up in a story by the South Bend Tribune, which reports St. Joseph County Economic Development Director Bill Schalliol was approached recently by IEDC officials with questions about locating an operation of that type in the community.
