The Midwest Connect team was one of 10 groups selected by California-based Hyperloop One for its Global Challenge to find potential routes for the high-tech cargo and passenger system that uses magnetic levitation to send pods through low-resistance tubes at "airline speeds."
Midwest Connect includes officials from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, as well as other stakeholders like the Columbus Partnership. Proposals were submitted more than a year ago and 2,600 teams were vying to be finalists. The 10 selected teams will work with Hyperloop One to validate and further analyze the proposals. The process includes developing initial ridership forecasts, business cases and a preliminary technical study of the route. As it is Hyperloop technology, the proposed Chicago-Columbus-Pittsburgh corridor would go directly between the three cities and not stop in Indiana. Estimates suggest passengers or cargo from Chicago-to-Pittsburgh, a 785-mile route, would take a total of 47 minutes.
