The IAA says the sale is part its commitment to return non-aviation land to local communities.
The land includes 1,724 acres that are restricted based on U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services and Army Corps of Engineers standards. An additional 142 acres is unrestricted and is available for use other than conservation purposes.
The IAA says the land includes protected wetland areas, critical habitats for the endangered Indiana bat and other animal and plant species, as well as Sodalis Nature Park.
"Our focus is on aviation, and being a good neighbor to the communities we serve," said IAA Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. "This land transaction is the embodiment of both – and we’re delighted it will transfer to the capable hands of one of our key business partners, the Town of Plainfield."
Plainfield Town Council President Robin Brandgard says the town will continue to preserve the ongoing conservation efforts, enhance recreational activities at Sodalis Nature Park and carefully plan for the areas where development is allowed.
