The Palladium-Item reports the delay will give the Wayne County Council the opportunity to decide on contributing to the project.
The demolition project is expected to cost around $8 million and Richmond Mayor Dave Snow has requested the county council and commissioners to contribute $2 million, according to the publication. The city has already been approved for the loans from the Indiana Brownfields Program, which could cover the remediation of hazardous materials from the site and the demolition of former hospital buildings.
During Tuesday’s meeting of the Richmond Common Council, Pete Zalesky, president of the Wayne County Council, said he hopes the county council will come to a final decision this month.
Last month, City Controller Beth Fields presented a tentative timeline for the project, saying work could begin as early as January 2.
A joint meeting of the Wayne county Council and Commissioners is scheduled for September 20. The common council meets next on September 18. The Pal-Item snow told the common council that waiting for a decision from the county level could put the project "very far behind."
