A well-known Indianapolis news anchor has announced his retirement. David Barras started at WISH-TV in 1980 and after nearly four decades of covering stories in central Indiana called his decision bittersweet and said he and his wife, who recently retired, are looking forward to "the next chapter of our lives." Prior to working at WISH-TV, Barras launched his media career at WTVW-TV in Evansville.

Barras was the first anchor on WISH-TV’s Daybreak program when it launched in the mid-1980s. He was paired with meteorologist Randy Ollis for most of the next 22 years in the timeslot. Barras eventually shifted to noon and evening newscasts and most recently, has anchored 6pm, 10pm and 11pm programs.

His accolades include an Emmy Award and multiple honors from the Associated Press. He is credited with landing the first interview confirming the Indianapolis Colts move from Baltimore and breaking news of Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., then called Subaru Isuzu, moving to Lafayette.

December 1 will be his last day.
