Final Property at Fort Ben Site Ready For Development
A key starting piece to what the city of Lawrence hopes will be a series of significant developments at Fort Benjamin Harrison will open Monday. Officials will showcase $3 million worth of road improvements on what the city says is the last major undeveloped portion of the former military base.
The property has undergone significant revitalization since the U.S. Army closed the base in 1996 It now includes homes and apartments, as well as restaurants, a brewery and other small businesses. The city and economic development officials are seeking interest in new projects including a hotel, grocery store, parking garage or additional housing options.
City officials will hold a ceremony to celebrate the completion of road work Monday morning at Otis Avenue and Melner Road.
