President Trump has nominated Indiana State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams to be the next United States Surgeon General. Adams was appointed to the state position by then-Governor Mike Pence in 2014. Governor Eric Holcomb reappointed him to lead the state health commission in January.

During an interview last year on Inside INdiana Business Television, Adams discussed the state’s response to the opioid epidemic, an issue also in the national spotlight.

Adams is currently an assistant professor of clinical anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a staff anesthesiologist at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis. If confirmed by the Senate, he will succeed Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, who serves as acting surgeon general. Adams was one of 17 nominations sent by Trump to the Senate for confirmation.

The position has a four-year term.
