Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler, Westfield Mayor Andy Cook, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard and Noblesville Mayor John Distlear join more than 50 local businesses and community organizations in support of the Mounds Greenway.
The Hoosier Environmental Council, which originally proposed the project, says the Mounds Greenway will create a high-quality linear park along the West Fork White River to preserve the river and its floodplain forests, wetlands and other natural communities. The project also aims to connect trails in Muncie and Anderson, while also building a recreational network eventually stretching to Indianapolis through a greenway extension along the White River.
"The White River is an asset for many Indiana communities," said Ditslear. "The Mounds Greenway plan allows more access to the river, enhances recreational and economic opportunities and connects cities in a new and exciting way. The future connection with the Mounds Greenway will allow our residents another option to explore the beauty of nature and the unique cities as they head northeast to Anderson and Muncie."
A study commissioned a year ago by the HEC said the Mounds Greenway could have a $13 million annual economic impact on east central Indiana. The HEC says the project would enhance the region’s quality of place and stimulate entrepreneurial investment.
