Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music has hired who it calls two of the most acclaimed ballerinas in the world: Kyra Nichols and Carla Körbes. Nichols will be a professor of music (ballet), holding the Kathy Ziliak Anderson Chair in Ballet, previously held by the late Violette Verdy. She was the longest-serving principal dancer at New York City Ballet, where she began as an apprentice but eventually moved up to the rank of principal dancer. Since her retirement, Nichols has taught students in a private home studio.

Körbes has been appointed associate professor of music (ballet) for the school. She is widely acclaimed as one of the finest dancers in the world when she retired from Pacific Northwest Ballet at age 33. Körbes also joined the NYCB as an apprentice and eventually became a member of the corps de ballet. Körbes later joined the Pacific Northwest Ballet as a soloist and was then promoted to principal dancer. Since retiring, she was an educator at The Colburn School in Los Angeles, as well as an associate director of the L.A. Dance Project. She continues to perform with the Dance Project and at the Vail International Dance Festival.
