The American Society of Clinical Oncology has presented Patrick Loehrer with the inaugural Allen S. Lichter Visionary Leader Award.
Loehrer serves as a professor of oncology and associate dean for cancer research at the IU School of Medicine in Indy. He is also the founder of the Hoosier Cancer Research Network, formerly known as the Hoosier Oncology Group. The ASCO cites his research in the treatment of a variety of cancers, including testicular cancer, among the many accomplishments which led to the award.
The award is named after the former chief executive officer of the ASCO, Allen Lichter, who retired in 2016 after 10 years in the role. Lichter says he is honored to have Loehrer receive the inaugural award in his name.
"(Loehrer’s) clinical research is exemplary," said Lichter. "Helping create the Hoosier Oncology Group was a masterstroke. His international cancer work was well along before others discovered international oncology. He has been a leader in our professional society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology. In short, the selection committee could not have chosen a more deserving recipient of this award."
The ASCO also recognized Loehrer’s work in creating a sustainable oncology health care system in western Kenya, which did not previously exist. Robin Zon, former IU Simon Cancer Center fellow, says much of Loehrer’s work has "changed the trajectory of cancer care throughout the world."
