The National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association have released its list of the top 100 worldwide universities to receive the most U.S. utility patents in 2016. Purdue University and Indiana University are included on the list and are the only Hoosier representatives.

The Purdue Research Foundation is tied for 12th on the list for being granted 105 patents during the calendar year. Cornell Research Foundation Inc. at Cornell University also received 105 patents.

The Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. is ranked 44th on the list for receiving 53 issued patents, tied with National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Despite receiving more patents than the previous year, IURTC’s ranking dropped one spot compared to the 2015 list.

"Inventions discovered by IU researchers not only can improve people’s quality of life but also can strengthen the economic development and prosperity of the state and nation when they form the foundation of new and established companies," said Bill Stephan, vice president for engagement at IU. "These results are possible because IURTC personnel focus on the quality, not just quantity, of the inventions. Industries across all sectors in the marketplace recognize the commercial potential of IU intellectual property."

The University of California tops the list, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology. The ranking is based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
