Indiana once again led the nation in steel production in 2016. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the state produced 27 percent of American-made steel, making it the top steel-producing state for the 42nd consecutive year.

Data from the American Iron and Steel Institute shows raw steel production in Indiana increased by 1.2 million tons last year, which was 5.1 percent higher than the previous year.

"Indiana produced 24.4 million net tons in 2016 and has been the top producing state since 1975," American Iron and Steel Institute spokesman Evan Martinez told The Times.

The publication says Indiana has nearly a quarter of all steelmaking capacity in the country with more than 20,000 steelworkers and half of the blast furnaces in the country. The majority of steel production in Indiana is located in Lake and Porter counties.
