Carroll County Touts Economic ‘Surge’
The Carroll County Economic Development Corp. says new industry and industrial park investment totaled nearly $425 million last year. Executive Director Laura Walls says the county is experiencing "a significant surge of interest."
The biggest development in 2016 was a planned $300 million to $410 million recycling center and plastics-to-diesel refinery in Camden. The proposed project is a partnership between GEP and Ohio-based U.S. Energy Logistics and it involves launching the recycling facility that would be known as Camden Recycling LLC and the refinery that would be known as Integrated Green Partners LLC. Delphi-based Indiana Packers Corp. also detailed plans for a new cold storage distribution center as part of a $23 million investment. Next Day container also announced a facility expansion and Peters Industrial unveiled a seven-building development to house warehouse and manufacturing tenants.
Wall said investments 2016 weren’t exclusive to commercial and industrial sectors. "This activity is also bringing in new retailers, restaurants and service businesses," she said. Walls added "local jobs have reached the 8,000 mark, up from recent years, and wages, too, are on the rise, up 49.7 percent since 2000. We are also seeing tremendous contributions from our heritage tourism sector."
