Pediatric Oncology Professor Mark Kelley was awarded the funding to investigate chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, which currently has no effective treatment or prevention.
Previous efforts by Kelley and colleagues have shown some promise. "We hypothesize that APE1 is a critical protein for protecting neurons from cancer therapies and that augmenting its DNA repair activity will prevent and reverse chemotherapy-induced alterations in sensory neuronal function," he said. In the lab and in mice, IU says past studies have shown that boosting APE1 protein repair levels decreases neurotoxicity.
