IU says the meeting centered on the "historical importance of a government-university research partnership."
The presidents of Penn State University, Ohio State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison joined McRobbie at the meeting. Part of the discussion included the value of university research and its impact on the nation, and how federal funding for the research is critical.
IU says the topic of university research was related to a statement by the Association of American Universities endorsed by McRobbie and leaders of other AAU member institutions.
McRobbie also talked about the importance of Pell grants, which IU says are utilized by more than a quarter of the university’s undergraduates. The issue was brought up during a discussion of the budget proposal from President Donald Trump’s administration and the possibility of cuts to federal financial aid programs.
