Mayor Asks, Why Not Greenwood?

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Mark Myers believes it's Greenwood's time. After years of watching other Hoosier cities launch big-scale quality of place projects, the second term Republican confidently says a $31 million plan to remake the city's downtown with a mix of residential, retail, office and recreational space, is a once in a lifetime opportunity. "How often is it that a community has an old downtown and gets the opportunity to get 19 acres in that downtown area and get a clean slate," asked Myers in an interview on Inside INdiana Business Television. "We have the opportunity to redevelop it into something that’s really going to help our downtown grow."

Myers' enthusiasm, and confidence, is fueled by a critical mass of residents and businesses that keep Greenwood among the state's fastest growing cities.  Then there's what's happening in places like Fishers, Carmel, Kokomo, Fort Wayne and Evansville, among others, where major investment is being funneled into live, work, play projects designed to attract and keep talent.

Myers says an important part of the Greenwood plan is reinventing the city’s park space.

Since announcing details of the redevelopment plan, Myers says he has received calls from numerous private developers interested in getting involved in the project, which he believes has the potential to create a new Greenwood over the course of the next decade.

"I hope it looks like we have a bustling downtown that is full of life, full of energy, full of people and (leading to) a healthier Indiana as we put more trails in."
