The program features an online curriculum to teach high school students how to be financially responsible early in life to avoid debt and financial scams in the future.
The pilot program is being implemented in Lake, Porter, Madison, Marion, St. Joseph and Vanderburgh counties. Lawson’s office says topics covered in the program include banking, credit scores, consumer protection, higher education, insurance and taxes, investing, payment types, renting versus owning and savings.
"We know that financially literate teens make smarter financial decisions for themselves, their families and their communities, whether it’s understanding taxes on their paychecks or applying for financial aid," said Lawson. "We are excited to begin this partnership with some of our local schools and hope their efforts will serve as a model for teachers and students around the state."
The program, which will run through the 2018-2019 academic year, is being offered to schools free of charge. It is being funded by fines paid by violators of Indiana securities laws.
Lawson’s office says the program uses education technology from EverFi. You can learn more about the program by clicking here.
