Texas Company to Lay Off Nearly 150 in East Chicago
Texas-based CBI Services LLC (NYSE: CBI) has announced plans to lay off nearly 150 workers at the Illinois-based SunCoke Energy Inc. (NYSE: SXC) Indiana Harbor facility in East Chicago. In a notice to the state, CB&I says the layoffs are the result of SunCoke’s decision not to renew its contract for maintenance services.
The layoffs are expected to occur around March 6. CB&I says it is working to make sure SunCoke hires as many of the affected employees as possible. Those that aren’t able to secure employment are being encouraged to apply for jobs available anywhere CB&I has a worksite.
CB&I says it expects the end of the contract with SunCoke to be permanent. The majority of the affected positions include ironworkers, laborers and bricklayers. Employees in certain positions are represented by unions.
