Randy and Kathy Powell have given $1.25 million to support the new Conrad Prebys Career Services Center.
The university says the center’s welcome center will be named in their honor. The $14 million facility is expected to be complete this fall and IU says it will meet important career development and job placement needs for students.
"One of the hardest things in life is for a well-educated but inexperienced student to get their first job out of college," said Randy Powell said. "I’ve had over 50,000 students in my career classes over the years, and it’s been rewarding to go to so many places, in the U.S. and around the world, and have alums come up to me and say, ‘You probably don’t remember me, but you made a huge impact on my life.’ I’ve had many personal successes in my career, but it’s hard to top that ego ride."
Powell says the new facility is crucial to continuing the legacy that the university’s career services team has developed. IU says it will nearly double the number of facilities where recruiters can meet privately with students, including more than 70 interview rooms and new multipurpose area.
Randy Powell worked at IU in various roles for more than 40 years before retiring in 2005. The gift counts toward IU’s $2.5 billion For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign.
