Trine Adds Women’s Triathlon Team & Names Coach
Trine University in Angola has named Danny Powell head coach of the new women’s triathlon team. He is a professor in Trine’s Ketner School of Business and a veteran of more than 50 triathlon races. The team will compete in the central division of the NCAA. Trine will have the only women’s triathlon program in Indiana and will join 12 others from throughout the country. Triathlon has not yet been deemed a full-fledged NCAA Championship sport; at least 40 institutions must sponsor the sport for that to happen. Trine says it has received grant assistance from USA Triathlon to help develop the team. Student athletes will compete in five regular season races, which will be followed by a NCAA regional championship and national qualifier with the winners advancing to the Women’s Collegiate Triathlon National Championship. NCAA triathlons consist of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bicycle ride and 5-kilometer run. Seven team members will compete in each race with the top five finishers earning points that will be added to the final team score. The announcement adds to the newest Trine sports programs that will begin this year. The university will see the beginning of men’s and women’s Division III ice hockey, men’s ACHA Division II ice hockey, men’s and women’s club bowling and a new esports program.
