IUPUI Names Associate Vice Chancellor, Dean

Subscribe NowIUPUI has appointed James "Jay" Gladden associate vice chancellor for undergraduate education and dean of University College. He has been dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management since 2009. Gladden will assume his new position February 1. As associate vice chancellor for undergraduate education, he will provide leadership for campuswide student-success programs and initiatives, promoting a culture of undergraduate persistence and achievement. Gladden will manage programs that serve students throughout their undergraduate experience, ensuring such programs meet current and future needs of students. As dean of University College, he will head the unit that serves students from the time of orientation through their entry into degree programs at IUPUI. Since becoming dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, Gladden created an Office of Student Success and grew the number of student-support staff from one to seven, increased freshman/sophomore retention rates to 87 percent from 75 percent, increased the number of degrees conferred by the school from 243 to 418, and increased the number of community-engagement hours completed by school students from less than 7,000 to more than 114,000. Before coming to IUPUI, Gladden was associate dean at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and he served in several other capacities at that university, including as acting department head for the Department of Sport Management, as director of the sport management graduate program and as an associate professor in the Department of Sport Management. In the private sector, he worked for a sports and entertainment agency and for Ralston Purina Co. Gladden earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University in 1988, his master’s degree in sport management from The Ohio State University in 1991 and his doctorate in sport management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1997.
