Subscribe NowTime is running out for students wishing to take advantage of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. Applications for the scholarship, which provides up to $7,500 per year for college students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years, are due by December 31.
The scholarship was passed by the Indiana General Assembly in March and later signed into law by Governor Mike Pence. The legislature appropriated $10 million for the program, which will be capped at 200 scholarship recipients per academic year. An individual recipient will be eligible to receive no more than $30,000 total.
"This scholarship is designed to attract Indiana’s best and brightest to the teaching profession, preparing a new generation of Indiana teachers to educate Hoosier students," said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers. "We know that having competent teachers in the classroom is one of the most important factors affecting students’ educational success, so we’re doing what we can to attract those individuals to the profession."
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education will review the applications and select finalists by January 31. Those finalists will be interviewed and the scholarship recipients will be notified by April 15.
Lubbers spoke about the program on Inside INdiana Business Television earlier this month and said she hopes the scholarship will help "uplift the profession of teaching so that more people will think of it as a meaningful career, which we know it is." You can view the interview in the video above.
