Joe DeHaven is retiring as chief executive officer of the Indiana Bankers Association, effective December 31. He has served in association leadership for 26 years and in Indiana banking for 47 years. Amber Van Til, IBA president, has been designated as DeHaven’s successor, effective January 1. DeHaven joined  IBA as president and chief operating officer in 2006, as a result of the merger of the Association with the Community Bankers Association of Indiana. In 2007, he was promoted to president and CEO. Prior to the IBA/CBAI merger, DeHaven had been serving the CBAI as president and CEO from 1990 through 2006. He had prior banking experience as an executive officer of Merchants National Bank of Muncie, now First Merchants Bank NA. In the banking community, DeHaven has served in several past leadership positions: as chairman of the board of trustees of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin; as chairman of the board of trustees of the Herbert V. Prochnow Educational Foundation; as a trustee of the IBA Group Health Insurance Trust; on the New Markets Tax Credit Advisory Board of the Cinnaire Corp. Fund for Housing; as assistant treasurer of the Indiana Legal Foundation; as a member of the advisory council of Friends of Traditional Banking; as a member of the administrative committee of the State Bankers Association Alliance; as a member of the Minority Bank Council of the Independent Community Bankers of America; as chairman of the Council of Community Banker Associations; as a board member of the Independent Community Bankers of America; as a member of the American Bankers Association Government Relations Administrative Council; as a board member of the Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corp.; and as president of the board of directors of Family Services of Delaware County. Additionally DeHaven has been a member of the Governmental Affairs Society of Indiana; of the American Society of Association Executives; and of the Indiana Society of Association Executives (ISAE), which named him Association Executive of the Year in 2010. A member of the Indiana Bankers Association Forty Year Club, DeHaven is a graduate of Ball State University and of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. Under DeHaven’s leadership, IBA membership has expanded to include all Indiana-headquartered banks and most out-of-state banks operating in Indiana; its budget has nearly tripled, making the IBA one of the most financially sound bank trade associations in the nation; and the Association and staff have won multiple awards, including more than 20 statewide honors from the ISAE. Additionally DeHaven has helped usher in an historic leadership transition in 2017, as the IBA names Van Til as the first female to serve as president and CEO, and Annette Russell, Security Federal Savings Bank, Logansport, as the first female chair of the board.
