The Indiana High School Athletic Association has named Steve Helmich the first president of the new IHSAA Foundation. He most recently served as executive vice president of the fundraising division of Damar Services Inc. in Indianapolis. Helmich also previously served 16 years as president of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. An Indiana University graduate, he spent 12 years as a teacher and coach at high schools in Noblesville, West Lafayette, Richmond and Columbus. Helmich will begin his new role November 14. He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the foundation, including the development of fundraising efforts and the distribution of scholarships and grants, according to the IHSAA. The organization says fundraising was one of Helmich’s main responsibilities while at Cathedral, where he helped bring it more than $3 million each year. The IHSAA Executive Committee established the foundation in 2015 and says, as funding becomes available, the foundation will award college scholarships to student-athletes and help support special projects at member schools through a grant program.
