The $10 million home for the Marching Hundred will be named after former band director Ray E. Cramer.
Construction on the 30,000 square-foot facility is set to begin this fall and expected to take about a year to complete. The new building will feature a large rehearsal hall, two smaller rehearsal rooms, instrument and uniform storage and repair space.
Cramer and his family will appear on a float during the IU Homecoming parade next month. He directed the band from 1972-1982. He calls the facility a "dream come true," saying future Marching Hundred members "will benefit tremendously with this first-class facility."
The Marching Hundred dates back to Indiana University’s first 22-piece band in 1896. The band has grown to nearly 300 musicians. It performs at IU football games and has made guest appearances at events including the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.
