The announcement comes after the departure of former Associate Vice President of Public Affairs and Government Relations Mark Land for a job at Clemson University.
Smith-Simmons will serve as interim assistant vice president for strategic communications and university spokesperson. The university says she will assume spokesperson duties from Land and will oversee news and media relations, campus communications and social media for IU.
Piurek has been appointed interim assistant vice president for public affairs and presidential communications. In his new role, the university says Piurek will oversee public affairs initiatives regarding "academic programs, university initiatives and institutional priorities."
Smith-Simmons and Piurek previously served as director of strategic communications for IUPUI and IU Bloomington, respectively. IU announced last month that Land was leaving the university to take the newly-created position of vice president of university relations for Clemson University.
