New Stellar Communities Moving Forward

Posted: Updated:

The mayor of Rushville says his city's Stellar Communities designation is a success that is years in the making. "We've been able to watch (the statewide program) kind of develop over the years and even in the early days, knew that we weren't prepared for a Stellar application," said Mike Pavey. The city missed the cut after applying last year for the first time. The perseverance was rewarded this week when Rushville and the town of Corydon were announced winners.

Pavey tells Inside INdiana Business the designation is not without challenges. "I think that our biggest challenge is going to be the same challenge that faces most rural communities and that's funding." He adds "obviously going into it, we sat down with our financial consultant to make sure we were in a good position. So like I say, it leverages our community, but we know it, and we think it's well worth it."

Engineering and design phases are expected to take two years in Rushville and construction could wrap up within five years. Corydon's pitch included details of the Harrison County town's recently-approved Strategic Investment Plan, which sets the stage for development through 2020. The city and town are slated to begin getting to work on their plans in the coming months.
