She succeeds Sarah O’Brien, who announced last month she was stepping down from the board. Whicker is a sixth grade language arts and social studies teacher at Riverview Middle School in Huntington. She was appointed to the SBOE in 2012 by then-Governor Mitch Daniels and reappointed by Governor Mike Pence. O’Brien’s resignation was made official following Wednesday’s board meeting. O’Brien stepped down in order to care for her daughter, who is dealing with a variety of medical issues.
