Grant to Help Purdue Researchers Tackle ‘Grand Challenges’
Purdue University has been awarded $750,000 by the New York-based Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to help take on global grand challenges. Purdue says the support will be used to involve humanists, social scientists and professionals that can get the results "more swiftly and effectively out of the academy into the hands of people who need it."
These professionals include publishing, library and policy experts. Officials say the approach is unique and will drive innovation and achieve greater public value.
Partners in the process will be the Scholarly Publishing Division of Purdue’s libraries, the Purdue Policy Research Institute in Discovery Park, the College of Liberal Arts and the Purdue Systems Collaboratory. The lead investigators will be Purdue Libraries’ Scholarly Publishing Division Director Peter Froehlich and Research Institute Director Laurel Weldon.
Froehlich said "it’s vital for publishers and policy centers to have support like this to work with researchers to explore ways to short-circuit traditional approaches to scholarly communications. The new award is a strong endorsement of our collaborative approach to research and scholarly publishing at Purdue."
In 2014, Purdue received a $539,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation.
