A company that has made its name making "fancy tool boxes" says it’s also looking to bring a positive atmosphere to the manufacturing industry, where employee culture is not always top-of-mind. Arcamed makes disposable tools used by doctors during surgery. During this month’s edition of Culture Matters, FirstPerson Advisor Mike Bensi says the central Indiana company aims to keep employees engaged through efforts ranging from community projects to meetings at the plant’s dart board.

The company makes customizable layered trays for use in orthopedic surgeries. Arcamed is in its fifth year of operations and has 42 employees and more than 70 customers around the world. The company says it is growing rapidly because people want a better quality of life and are turning to spine and extremity procedures.

Bensi says the dart board helps Arcamed spark employee creativity and make conversations happen verbally that might have otherwise just occurred through email. The company also shuts down the plant for about one hour each month to welcome new employees, discuss safety efforts and give business updates.

Bensi says Arcamed President John Desalvo likes to ask potential employees what their three values would be if they started their own company. Bensi says it’s Desalvo’s way of seeing how a person will impact the morale of the company.

Arcamed is underway with a move to a new building at Ameriplex in Indianapolis, which will expand its footprint from 15,000 square feet to 50,000 square feet.
