June Unemployment Rate Drops

Subscribe NowIndiana’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.8 percent in June, compared to 5 percent the previous month. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says more than 8,500 Hoosiers found employment last month.
The department says Indiana’s labor force grew by more than 3,400 in June, and has grown by more than 190,000 since January 2013. Since 2009, the low point of employment for the state, Commissioner Steven Braun says Indiana’s private sector employment growth has topped the nation’s (13.7 percent vs. 12.8 percent). Over the past three years, Indiana’s private sector has added 148,000 jobs.
The state’s highest growth sectors for June were leisure and hospitality, construction and private education and health services. Sectors including professional and business services and manufacturing reported losses last month.
Governor Mike Pence says the June employment report is evidence that "Indiana is on a roll." In a release, he said, "Our economic momentum is a testament to the hardworking Hoosiers in businesses large and small who are dedicated to starting and growing their companies in the Hoosier state. As we continue to foster an environment of growth and opportunity, our administration will continue to practice the pro-growth, low-regulation policies that help our economy grow."
