The organizations say the agreement involves a commitment of over 40,000 hours from more than 2,000 new nurse volunteers.
The American Red Cross and IU Health say the alliance "likely represents the largest single onboarding of nurse volunteers since World War I." The collaboration will also involve installing 5,000 smoke alarms in targeted areas, delivering 150 disaster preparedness training programs to students, training 150 Disaster Health Services volunteers and CPR training for 1,000 people.
In a release, American Red Cross Indiana Region Chief Executive Officer Chad Priest said, "In 1916 hundreds of nurses in Indiana answered the call to their country and joined the Red Cross movement during World War I. It is only fitting that 100 years later, as we celebrate a Century of Red Cross service in Indiana, our alliance with IU Health will bring a new generation of nurse volunteers to service for humanity."
IU Health Chief Nurse Executive Michelle Janney says the partnership is "an opportunity to come together and rally around common goals in the community." She says the new nurse volunteers "will unite with ARC to participate in a diverse spectrum of events across the state."
The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross serves 87 Indiana counties, including 10 Homeland Security Disaster Districts and six Red Cross chapters.
