The school says the funding will allow the center to double the number of students it reaches through its Discovering the Science of the Environment program.
The program currently serves about 3,000 students each year in the Indianapolis area. The school says the grant will allow it to expand its reach to areas outside of Marion and surrounding counties. CEES says the funding will also enable the program to expand its curriculum to include alternative energy and energy conservation. The school will also purchase a "mobile science trailer," which will include interactive technology and GIS mapping capabilities for use in hands-on outdoor lessons.
The foundation will present the grant on Friday morning on the terrace of the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. Duke Energy Foundation President Melody Birmingham-Byrd, IUPUI Chancellor Nasser Paydar and School of Science Dean Simon Rhodes will take part in the event.
Birmingham-Byrd says the grant will put "science education on wheels" to expand educational resources throughout the state. Paydar says the program makes science "real and relevant" for students in fourth through ninth grades.
