The Walnut Street work involves sidewalk and biking trail upgrades, new planters and more tailored space for outdoor dining. The efforts were spurred, in part, by the city’s need to improve safety for pedestrians and meet Americans With Disabilities Act requirements. Mayor Dennis Tyler says the improvements are in-line with ongoing initiatives designed to attract more business and young talent downtown.
"This final phase of the Walnut Street project is a continuation of our city’s efforts to reinvest in itself. This will make Muncie more walkable, more bikeable and fully accessible to all. Most importantly, open access will be maintained for all businesses and clear signage for parking will be in place for little, if any, inconvenience to customers. Downtown will be open and accessible for business, outdoor dining opportunities and many summer events," he says.
Muncie-based FlatLand Resources is the project’s designer. The city says the plans worked in additional flexibility for the Canan Commons space, which could allow for expanded events.
