The March/April report from Atlanta-based Garner Economics ranks the metropolitan statistical area of Indianapolis, Carmel and Anderson as the 13th most productive for Gross Regional Product per worker.
The report says the Indy/Carmel/Anderson MSA generates $285,771 in value for each manufacturing job in the region. The region was ranked among 381 metro areas throughout the country.
The Evansville MSA was not far behind, ranked 28th in the nation. The report says Evansville generates $224,030. The central Indiana and Evansville regions have higher values for each manufacturing job than much larger U.S. metros such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Memphis and San Diego.
"When it comes to manufacturing productivity, the Evansville metro is one of the true leaders in the country," said Greg Wathen, president & CEO for the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana. "While companies can manufacturer products almost anywhere, productivity matters when it comes to profitability."
The report was compiled with data from the U.S. Bureaus of Labor Statistics and Economic Analysis. Other Indiana MSAs on the list and their rankings include:
- Terre Haute – 72
- South Bend/Mishawaka – 100
- Michigan City/La Porte – 156
- Fort Wayne – 274
- Columbus – 312
- Muncie – 318
- Kokomo – 331
