Mill Street Project Begins in Westfield
One of the key components of a major downtown redevelopment project in Westfield is underway. Work has begun on the Mill Street reconstruction, which will set the stage for the city’s Grand Junction Plaza development.
The Mill Street project will be done in three phases, including road and bridge work, stream restoration and wetland mitigation. The city says the work will correct flood mitigation issues, pedestrian and parking issues and will anticipate needs for the Grand Junction Plaza project.
"This is really the first phase in many ways of actual work for the Grand Junction Plaza project," said Westfield Mayor Andy Cook. "It’s exciting to see this road reconstruction project begin, knowing that there is still much work to be done."
The city says Mill Street is expected to reopen by the end of the year.
When plans for the Grand Junction Plaza project were revealed in January, Cook said the project would become "the heart and soul of downtown" once completed. Developers say Grand Junction Plaza will include a stage, wetland pavilion and space for cafes and restaurants.
