Weimer said Indiana Dunes State Park set record gate revenue both in 2014 and 2015, thanks to the 3 Dune Challenge, which kicked off in 2014. The challenge was designed to get people to hike the state park’s toughest trail.
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center assisted nearly 89,000 visitors last year, which is 10 times as many people as a decade ago. Weimer said visitors last year came from all 50 states and 46 countries.
Weimer added that tourism is one of Porter County’s main industries. Tourism contributes $386 million to the county’s economy each year and accounts for nearly 5,000 jobs.
