Franklin, Ind. — Katharine Kruse has been elected as the newest member of the Franklin College Board of Trustees.
Kruse's employment history includes being the owner of retail stores Pan Handler and John Simmons. She also managed the gift shop at Connor Prairie. She was a museum store consultant for over 20 years before she retired. She now serves as the head of a small family foundation, Mothershead Foundation.
Kruse graduated from Colorado Women's College with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
Kruse is a board member for the Indiana Historical Society and an honorary board member for the Indianapolis Civic Theater. She is also a board advisor for the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. She serves on the advisory board for the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the board of incorporators for Crown Hill Cemetery and the foundation board for the Woodstock Club. She is also a member of the Museum Store Association.
She and her husband Richard reside in Indianapolis and have three grown children. Kruse enjoys golfing, sailing and reading.
The Franklin College Board of Trustees consists of 40 elected voting members, each serving a three-year term. There is no limit to the number of terms served. Three members are elected by the board upon recommendation by the Alumni Council. The board meets three times annually in the fall, winter and spring, with the fall meeting designated as the Annual Meeting.
The board's powers include instituting and supporting fundraising efforts, establishing and reviewing educational programs and establishing the College’s annual budget. In addition, the board authorizes: Construction of new buildings and renovations of existing facilities, changes in tuition and fees, purchases of land, buildings and major equipment and faculty appointments with tenure.
Founded in 1834, Franklin College is a residential four-year undergraduate liberal arts institution with a scenic, wooded campus located 20 minutes south of downtown Indianapolis. The college prepares men and women for challenging careers and fulfilling lives through the liberal arts, offering its approximately 1,000 students 36 majors, 39 minors and 11 pre-professional programs. In 1842, the college began admitting women, becoming the first coeducational institution in Indiana and the seventh in the nation.
