As of Monday, 47,475 prospective first-year students have submitted applications, which is a 7.2 percent increase over last year’s record, according to Purdue’s Office of Admissions. Applicants from Indiana increased 6.2 percent, along with out-of-state applicants, which also increased. Applications from international students remained steady.
"Word is out that Purdue is a place that values both a rigorous, meaningful education and student affordability," said Purdue President Mitch Daniels. "We stand in contrast to the prevailing attitude in higher ed, and applicants are noticing."
The university says February 1 was the priority deadline for applications, but applications will still be accepted for most programs "well into the summer with limited space available." Purdue received around 1,000 applications last year after the priority deadline.
Purdue credits the hard work of its recruiting staff, its use of the Common Application, and strong relationships with high school counselors among the contributing factors for the record numbers.
