The University of Notre Dame, Indiana University and Purdue University have been selected to host groups of Sub-Saharan Africa students for a flagship federal leadership program. As part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, dozens of students will attend a six-week academic and leadership development institute in June.

The fellows represent 49 countries and will participate in coursework, training, mentoring, networking and professional opportunities on the South Bend, Bloomington, Indianapolis and West Lafayette campuses. IU and Purdue are new to the program, while Notre Dame is participating for a third year.

The program is the flagship of President Barack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative and includes 1,000 students at three dozen U.S. colleges and universities. Fellows were selected from more than 40,000 applicants.
