The Indiana Department of Transportation is planning to change over 300 traffic signals in southern Indiana later this year. The work is part of a statewide effort to reduce crashes at intersections with traffic signals.

INDOT will install 364 new signals with retro-reflective back plates with yellow reflective borders along U.S. 31 in Greenwood, U.S. 50 in Seymour and State Road 46 in Bloomington. The department says the back plates improve visibility and alert drivers of the signal’s presence during a power outage.

The state’s has a nearly $300,000 contract with Michiana Contracting of Plymouth to complete the work, which is expected to start in mid-May and be done by July 31.

INDOT cites a Federal High Administration study which documents a 28.6 percent crash reduction after a new signal head is installed. The study also showed a reduction of injury crashes by 36.7 percent.
