The central Indiana organization will use the funding to boost multiple initiatives, including a new co-ed program called STEM Scouts.
STEM Scouts involves students ranging from third grade through senior year working one-on-one with educators and experts to provide "real experiences" in science, technology, engineering and math fields.
Other programs that will benefit include:
- A partnership with adult consultants from sponsoring organizations involving career learning experiences for 14-20 year-old young men and women
- After School programming for youth in low-income areas
- Expanding scouting opportunities in Hispanic communities with a focus on anti-bullying, family engagement and combating childhood obesity
- Environmental sustainability efforts involving council property evaluations and reducing their impact on natural resources
Council President Bob Palmer says "the support of Lilly Endowment means we can continue to offer life-changing experiences to the youth of Indianapolis and central Indiana. This grant will expand our programs focused on instilling the values of leadership, character development and citizenship in young men and women to better our communities."
Crossroads of America Council covers 25 counties and has four offices and seven camp properties.
