The grant will be used for brownfield assessments in and near the Massachusetts Avenue – Brookside Industrial Corridor.
A brownfield is a property that is either abandoned, idled or underutilized and has either actual or perceived environmental contamination. The testing on such sites is recommended and sometimes required before purchasing a commercial or industrial property. The city says property owners will be able to use the test results to address any environmental issues and return the properties to productive use.
The Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development will administer the funds. The DMD says funding assistance may be available to individuals and companies who are planning to buy or sell properties in the area.
The DMD will hold a public meeting January 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Martin University Gathertorium building with representatives from the firms that will complete the testing. Click here to learn more about the grant process.
