The company says the decision is the result of delays in certain programs and less-than-anticipated workload levels at the facility. The reduction will include both IUE-CWA union represented and non-represented employees.
The facility employs about 1,000 people. Spokesman John Benzing said the reduction will help the company ensure that it remains competitive in the dynamic commercial aerospace market.
"The decision to reduce our workforce is never easy, but we believe this is necessary to ensure that we continue to win new business and grow," said Benzing. "BAE Systems will work closely with union, local, state, and federal officials to assist employees affected by this layoff."
In September, the company cut the ribbon on its new, $39 million plant in Fort Wayne. Our partners at 21Alive say the facility came with tax abatements approved by the Fort Wayne City Council. Councilman Russ Jehl tells 21Alive that BAE would have to cut 25 percent of its Fort Wayne work force to lose its abatement.
