The university says it will look for input to develop a job description for the professorship. A national search is expected to begin in the second half of 2016. Since the money is in an endowed fund, it will remain invested and the earnings are intended to secure the professorship in perpetuity.
Gladdys Muir launched the nation’s first undergraduate peace studies program in 1948 at Manchester. Her program examined issues of interpersonal conflict and structural injustice.
"Muir believed that if she planted the seeds of creative nonviolence in the hearts of her students, that they would scatter those potent ideas across the globe," said Dave McFadden, president of Manchester University. "Indeed, over the years, many Manchester graduates have done just that."
The university hit its goal on New Year’s Eve, after an anonymous donor pledged to match year-end gifts up to $25,000 earlier in the month.
