An international publication has released its inaugural U.S. college rankings and three schools in Indiana are among the top 100. The list from The Economist is designed to determine the economic value of colleges and universities.

It considers factors that the publication says help figure "the economic value of a university is equal to the gap between how much money its graduates earn, and how much they might have made had they studied elsewhere." The data were derived from nearly 1,300 four-year schools in the U.S. Department of Education’s recent "college scorecard" and estimated earnings figures the authors say they ran through a multiple regression analysis.

More specific factors the publication chose to help pare down the pool of colleges include average SAT scores, sex and race breakdown, size and type (public or private) of the school and which subjects students studied.

The Economist says the list of schools is limited in some aspects, including its reliance on federal aid applicants and its 10 year earnings cut-off.
